Ming Yue (Winner of 2024 Call for Scores)

明 樂 (Ming Yue, Family Name: Ming) is an emerging UK-based Chinese composer, (ethno)musicologist specilised in Sino-Western Studies; Chinese Scholarship Council funded PhD at University of York; Principal Investigator and composer of Young Artistic Creative Talent Funding Project (China Art Fund, 2019) and Revitalisation of SiHui folk Song (2023). Her music conveys deep emotions with new means linking forgotten Chinese indigenous traditions—specifically Sanxian, a traditional Chinese instrument that is widely applied in Northern folk musics yet neglected in Contemporary Musicology—with Western Contemporary Classic and Electronic Music, Immersive Technologies, and Chinese Dances, blending contemporary sentiments while respecting the authenticity of folk elements to create a unique voice based on deep grounding in Chinese traditions. Her doctoral outcome consists of complementary components of an 89,000-word thesis and ten compositions sharing her views on ‘regrounding’ Chinese traditions, contextualised in Contemporary Chinese music aesthetics. Winner of First Prize at the Bruno Maderna Competition Composers (2023), her recent works present her exploration of linking Chinese and Western sensibilities, including her applications of contemporary techniques on Sanxian as well as attempts on revitalising music traditions of Tianjin and West Canton areas. Her outcomes on these topics have been utilised in numerous major projects relating to tradition music and dance revitalisations, with a significant list of productions being awarded, including: a first prize in Traditional Music category and an Honorable Mention in Modern Category at The St. Cecilia IVIMC International Vocal and Instrumental Music Competition; a first prize at the Odin International Music Competition (Composition group); a third prize at The 3rd International Competition of Composers "New Music Generation (2021)", as well as other prizes relating to music composition and to the integration of music teaching with dance. Most recently, she has successfully completed the project "Revitalisation of Sihui Folk Song" combining Chinese folk musics, Western Contemporary classical (and rock) musics, Sanxian Music, and immersive technology (Virtual reality) in November 2023. This piece has later been awarded Zhaoqing Municipal Publicity and Culture Development Special Fund (2024) as one of the cultural labels of Zhaoqing City. She has also completed a piece based on Fengkai Ballad (in West Canton) for a premiere by American Modern Ensemble at Mostly Modern Festival 2024, and was chosen as one of the finalists at the Musica Per Archi 8th Edition, in collaboration with KLK String Orchestra.
