Hannah Higa is a university student in Southern California and an aspiring composer. She is currently pursuing a degree in Public Health, but dedicates what free time she has to her passion for music. Throughout her childhood, she enjoyed learning to play a variety of instruments, from violin to guitar to vibraphone. She taught herself how to compose by transcribing her favorite songs and solos—usually jazz fusion or video game music. Though limited by the constraints of free digital instruments, she enjoys meticulously tinkering with tempo and volume automation to bring life to her work. Ultimately, she believes composition is an incredibly powerful medium to express emotion and tell stories. “Call for Scores” caught her attention with its objective to democratize composition, especially as an outsider in formal music training and publication. As a self-taught and relatively new composer, she is extremely excited to collaborate with such talented musicians, share her music, and hear it performed for the first time. She is eager to learn so much more, connect with others, and continue to grow as a musician.
