Composed in October of 2022, "Skipping Stones at the Pond" was written for Evan's chamber music group at the University of Memphis (the "Magnolia Winds"). Normally, the group is a wind quintet, but in fall of 2022 there was no horn player.
After several suggestions from listeners and teachers to make more harmonically varied music, this piece was a trial in pushing Evan's creative boundaries. Starting with a minimal arpeggiated groove, the piece grows and expands throughout numerous variations of the initial material. While working within the limitations of how rhythmically difficult the music could be for the group, Evan takes advantage of all registers of each instrument used. To expand the high register of the piece, Evan opted to use piccolo in place of flute. This creates a more playful feeling across the work and, at times, creates a full sound for the small instrumentation.
Thank you, and please enjoy "Skipping Stones at the Pond" by Evan Erickson.
